for
the last 10 years or so the iconic blend of african
folk, american jazz and funk, and percussive horn,
drum and chant oriented music called afro beat has
experienced a grand revival. dozens of new bands
worldwide consciously carrying the legacy of fela
kuti into the new century. jaribu afrobeat
arkestra is one of those new bands on the
scene. spiritually influenced by the great fela
kuti, “jaribu” which means “try”
in swahili, have created their own “neo afrobeat”
sound, interweaving traditional afro beat with funk
and jazz sounds. after the release of their debut
album entitled afro sound system
(2009) they started to search for ways to expand
and develop their sound and began recording their
second album, mediacracy.
this 7“ contains special dj edits of tricky
liars and afro soul knows.
the full versions can be enjoyed on the aforementioned
album on 2LP, CD and digital download. both tunes
of this 7" are vinyl-only
which means that they will not be released digitally!
limited to 500 copies.

it is
likely that some of you are already familiar with
derobert & the half truths.
after releasing some 45rpm singles on their own
g.e.d. soul records label they finally released
a full length album entitled soul in a digital
world. sad but true, it has been released
on compact disc only. real djs never had the chance
to play out songs from that album. that was the
main reason why we decided to put out two of the
best tracks on vinyl. take me out of the
dark is a deep-funk belter with an unusual
drum pattern. don't worry, it works wonders on the
dance floor. the flip side titled the joy
shows their other, soulful side.
a limitation of 500
copies and an excellent sound quality ensures
demand between funk and (northern) soul collectors.
be quick and play it out loud!

diazpora
hails from hamburg, germany, consisting of a bunch
of young fellows who are proud to present their
debut on tramp records. although they have privately
released a couple of albums, this is their first
45rpm single release. seven up
has been originally released on a previous album.
however the version to be found here is a live version
recorded at a small street festival in hamburg in
september 2010. the drums and the bass simply kick-ass
(imagine it is a double-bass!) the decent work of
the guitar player fits just perfectly and the solos
of both trumpet and saxophone brings the whole tune
to another level.
as on all tramp 45rpm singles
these two songs will not be released digitally.
save the vinyl and play it out loud!

here
is something fun from a recent session I composed,
co-produced, arranged, engineered and performed
on. seattle washington, usa. september 15th, 2010.
the working session name is t.d. & the jimmy
james 3 or we might go with the mosquitohawks
I was experimenting with how far I could push the
drum and guitar channel through this weirdo amp
I had laying around. as usual, I dug into my stash
of noname mics turned to my trusty cassette 4-track.
drums went thru the same "moneymaker"
mic as in the crawdad farmers and chez jojo
sessions. I am pretty happy with the results. I
think we got the good vibes.
a different version of jalapeno pep is available
on the feeling nice compilation (tr-9012)
which has been released on tramp in june 2011.

since
his first 45 rpm single release on tramp (tr-1012
dont go away / the fresh one) lucky brown
has steadily been improving his sound/production
and became a very important part of tramp records.
this time he performs under a pseudonym again which
does not mean at all that the quality of the recording
differs from his recent output. in fact, the crawdad
farmers recordings (actually lucky brown and
his band) gets more and more used to delivering
authentic funk which not many bands come up with
these days. the way he records his songs seems to
be simple, but as soon as you try to do it the same
way you realize that it is not simple at all. it
takes a whole lot more than just placing mics in
the right places and to having the proper equipment.
what you need is something else, it's called SOUL!
and lucky brown definitely has a lot of it!
redbeard and jesses party are released
just in time for the summer of 2010. either you
play it at your private bbq or a packed dancefloor,
people will go nuts for it for sure. be prepared
for more raw funk and soul music from lucky brown,
his debut longplayer is in the making and will hit
the streets soon!

the
story of the qualitons began in 2007 when
dj/producer kanada káosz decided
to put together a funk/soul/afrobeat band. he
went to dozens of concerts to hand-pick musicians
for this project. this is the way the qualitons
were born. the band were named after the living
memory of the former hungarian recording company
"qualiton" - a record label which existed
from the late 50s up to the 70s.
the a-side of this single, the heavy beat-influenced
c'mon baby (get heavy with me), is a perfect
example of their unique style they have developed
over the years. drummer hunor g. szabo
is not only playing his instrument but also delivers
the vocals along with the entire band.
on the b-side you have margit,
a 2 minutes and 41 seconds lasting funk instrumental
with a roaring bass-line of deepest intensity.
the sound and production of this gem is another
proof for the bands ability not only to imitate
but develop the golden sound of the 1960s.

the
band was named after the living memory of the
hungarian recording company "qualiton"
- a label which exsisted between the late 1950's
and 1970's. those records were able to bear the
spirit of the eastern block along with the western
impacts of the language of dance music. the band
was founded to cultivate the musical heritage
of the authentic instrumental sounds of those
ages.
mellbimbo, the title track of their second
7inch on tramp, is a stone-cold killer from beginning
to end. the band members show once again their
skills on each instrument, especially Matyas Premecz
gets down on the organ. for this recording they
assembled a bright, tight horn section which arrangement
is obviously influenced by the psychadelic afro-sounds
of the 1970s.
kulmi with its hypnotic
midtempo groove is another original composition
of the band. Barna Szoke is grooves along on his
guitar, using the wah-wah pedal in a very decent
way. drummer Hunor G. Szabo does a great job too
and even delivers a short but tight drum break
right after the bridge.

tramp
records' third release in the recently established
JAZZ DANCE SERIES is not a re-issue from
back in the day but a jewel from a new band which
has been featured on the contemporary jazz
compilation released earlier this year.
the cultures of rhythm,
a new york based collective of experienced young
players from a variety of musical backgrounds,
brings many influences to their sound. comprised
of current and former members of the duke ellington
orchestra, french kicks, isley brothers, mofro,
and kevin jones and tenth world, diversity is
the groups greatest asset. with so many perspectives
represented, the players find common ground on
a fundamental level, and the resulting musical
explorations are a celebration of soulfulness,
distilled into exciting new forms.
fronted by noted trumpeter
and new orleans native kevin louis, the groups
members are steeped in the jazz, soul, blues,
and american songbook traditions. playing from
deep within the history of their instruments,
they stroll, strut, and dance through swing, jazz,
second line, blues, funk, boogaloo, and rock.
organist adam scone wrote big shrimp
while monday child is an original composition
by louis armstrong.
